John Britt Pottery

This good news is that we are now in the 7th printing of the hardback copy of Mid-Range Glazes. All known errors have been fixed since the 4th ed. To find your edition look at page 4 and at the bottom is a series of numbers ..whatever it starts with is your edition so..10,9,8,7,6,5 …means 5th ed. or ..10,9,8,7,6,5,4 means 4th, etc.

Here are the known errors for the first and second printings of “The Complete Guide to Mid-Range Glazes” All of these corrections are fixed by third/current edition:

Only two corrections for 3rd Ed.

1. Page 78 – Tile 3 should say “Selsor Chun; stone 1; R1” and Tile #4 should say “Selsor Chun; stone 1; E1”.
2. Page 178 – Crater Glazes Chart- it should read 3.5% silicon carbide not 0.35%.
3. Page 121 – in the Recipe chart Selsor Blue is listed as containing 12.5% Ferro Frit 3110 but should be Gerstley 12.5% and John’s Blue is listed as containing 12.5% Gerstley Borate and should say 12.5% frit 3134.

Below are corrections for 1st and 2nd editions.

  1. Page 31– Should read: “Rutile is a variable material; the amounts of red iron oxide and titanium dioxide may vary. The light form is calcined.”
  2. Page 46, 47, 152 and 153– Recipe charts have incorrect Celsius temperatures.

For example: In the charts on page 46 – Firing E1 in the Rate column it says “Segment 1. 150° F / 66° C” it should be “83°C.”

So the numbers in Firing Charts E1 – E4 and Steven Hill’s as well as the Crystalline Firing Charts on page 152 and 153 which are called Firing C1 and Firing C2, should be as follows:

RATE
50° F/per hour = 28° C/per hour

100° F/per hour = 56° C/per hour

120° F/per hour = 67° C/per hour

150° F/per hour = 83° C/per hour

200° F/per hour = 111° C/per hour

250° F/per hour = 139° C/per hour

400° F/per hour = 222° C/per hour

500° F/per hour = 278° C/per hour

550° F/per hour = 306° C/per hour

850° F/per hour = 473° C/per hour

999° F/per hour = 555° C/per hour

  1. Page 47– Stephen Hill’s Cone 6 Firing Chart:
    In Segment 5 add a one hour hold ;

  2. Page 48 – Firing Graph “Firing R2” the reduction begins at cone 07 (1780 F/ 971 C) not cone 012.
  3. Page 70 – “Laguna 365” should read “Standard 365.”
  4. Page 70 – Caption missing Black Lacquer Lid. Should read ; Elisa Wang, Prosperity, 2012. 4 x 5 x 4 in. (10.2 x 12.7 x 10.2 cm). Light stoneware; black lacquer lid; cone 6; reduction. Photo by Thomas Wong. (Glaze recipes on pages 163 and 156.)
  5. Page 78 – Tile #3 should read “Selsor Chun; stone 1; R1” and Tile #4 should read “Selsor Chun; stone 1; E1.”
  6. Page 87 – Last sentence should say “Thickness also matters; note how a thin application is orange (See tile 27.)”
  7. Page 108 – In the Glaze Chart – Green, the glaze Spearmint should have 23% Frit 3195 (not Frit 3134).
  8. Page 110 – Emerald Green in Chrome Green Recipe Chart should be Gerstley Borate 50% instead of Strontium Carbonate.
  9. Page 123 – In recipe chart Strontium Blues – the glaze Watercolor Blue-Green has 8.2% copper carbonate NOT cobalt carbonate.
  10. Page 126– Tile 12 reads “Hansen” but should read “Rowan.”
  11. Page 129 – Caption for photo should read: Autumn’s Crystal Matte over Glossy Green, and Floating Blue. …..(Glaze recipes on pages 132, 109, and 119.)

  13. Page 139 – In the Glossy Black Chart under Hansen 20 x 5 there is no “Whiting 20” but rather “Wollastonite 20.”
  14. Page 142 – In the right hand column, last paragraph 5 lines from the bottom, where is says “V.C. Matte Yellow is a good example of this type, with 6-10 percent Zircopax and 4 percent rutile.” That should say “6-10 percent titanium dioxide and 4 percent rutile.”
